Koi, or more specifically nishikigoi, are colored varieties of carp that are kept for decorative purposes in outdoor koi ponds or water gardens. Koi is an informal name for the colored variants of carp kept for ornamental purposes Koi have an average lifespan of 40 years. It is believed that the oldest-known koi lived to be nearly 230 years old; the age was determined by testing the fish's scales, which produce growth rings much like a tree. Maintaining great water quality with regular water changes and adequate filtration is important to help keep your koi healthy. Avoid overcrowded conditions, as this is a major cause of stress and disease.  koi fish eat algae, plants, insects, worms, seeds, and anything they can stir up from the pond's bottom. They hunt along the pond floor and along the surface. If you have an ecosystem pond, they can continue having their natural diet
