Mature Height/spread: 40-60 ft/40-60 ft. In ideal conditions, slow to medium growth rate of 12″ to 24″ per year.
Soil / Climate: Chinese Chestnuts prefer moderately acid, sandy loam soil. Very drought tolerant. Enjoys full sun.
Notes: The Chinese Chestnut tree is highly blight resistant. Should be planted in pairs or groups for pollination. Nuts usually begin growing by the fourth or fifth year and ripen mid to late September through October. The prickly seed is close to 3 1/2″ round and encapsulates anywhere between one and four edible nuts. The Chinese Chestnut tree nuts are large and sweet, though not as sweet as an American Chestnut. The leaves are dark green with a toothed margin and 3-5″ long. In fall the leaves turn yellow/copper.
Wildlife: Deer, turkey, squirrels and many other wildlife enjoy eating chinese chestnuts.
